Students preparing for next year's WAEC and JAMB Examinations have the opportunity of on -line past Questions solutions for Mathematics as serialized by our one of our Mathematics experts.
1) A square of cardboard is taped at the perimeter by a piece of ribbon 20cm long. What is the area of the board?
(jamb 1979 Quest 16)
A. 20cm2
B. 25cm2
C. 36cm2
D. 100cm2
E. 16cm2
Solution
The perimeter of the square cardboard is equal to the length of the ribbon
That is perimeter= 20cm
Perimeter of a square= 4L
20cm= 4L
L= 20cm/4 = 5cm
Area of a square= l2
= {5cm}2= 5cm X 5cm= 25cm2
Ans= B
2).The annual profit of a transport business were divided between the two partners A and B in the ratio 3:5. If B received N3000 more than A, the total profit was (jamb 1979 Qust 8)
A. N5000
B N1800
C. N12000
D. N24000
E. N8000
Solution
3:5= X: 3000 + X
3/5= X/3000 + X
Cross multiplying
3(3000 + X) = 5(X)
9000 + 3X = 5X
9000= 5X – 3X
9000= 2X or 2X= 9000
Divide through by 2
2X/2= 9000/2
X= 4500
Total profit= profit A + profit B
T profit= X + X + 3000
T profit= 4500 + 4500 + 3000= N12000
Ans= C
3)In base ten, the number 1011012 equals
(jamb 1979 Qust 7)
A. 15
B. 4
C. 45
D. 32
E. 90
Solution
1011012= 1X25 + 0X24 + 1X23 + 1X22 + 0X21 + 1X20
= 32 + 0 + 8 + 4 + 0 + 1
= 4510
Ans= C
4) .If the value of π is taken to be 22/7, the area of a semicircle of diameter 42m is?
A. 5544m2
B. 1386m2
C. 132m2
D. 264m2
E. 693m2
(jamb 1979 Qust 3)
Solution
r= d/2 = 42/2= 21m
Area of a semi-circle= πr2/2
= 22/7 X 21 X 21 = 22 X 3 X 21 = 11 X 3 X 21 = 693m2
